Permalinks Custom Structure of /%post_id%/%postname%/ not loading correctly (4 posts)

I recently changed my permalink settings from Defaut to a Custom Structure of /%postname%/. The result was the time to load a page was a second or two slower (not good, but not too bad), but the time to update or save a page increased from a few seconds to around a minute.

Reading through the Forums I decided to change the Custom Structure to /%post_id%/%postname%/ in an effort to improve the performance times. I actually did the change by going back via the Default Settings just to be on the safe side.

The result was that the Permalinks looks exactly like they were when I was using the Custom Structure of /%postname%/ ie there were no post ids in the permalinks.

Also, on a few of my pages, when links to other pages on my site were clicked, they went to the wrong pages even though the permalinks looked like they were pointing to the correct page.

I have now successfully changed back to a Custom Structure of /%postname%/ but would like to be able to successfully install a Custom Structure of /%post_id%/%postname%/ to hopefully improve the loading, and particularly saving, times of pages.

Any help would be much appreciated

It sounds like your .htaccess file wasn't updated. Are you updating it manually or have you given WP write access? Can you try resetting your permalinks back to the ugly default, deleting the .htaccess file and then trying to set up your preferred custom structure again?

WP has write access to the .htaccess file.

Also, I am not getting an error message of the form "If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t" as given in the Permalink section of the Codex.

Did resetting your permalinks back to the ugly default, deleting the .htaccess file and setting up your preferred custom structure again work?
