Support » Fixing WordPress » Permalinks causing Category links problem

  • I’m using the /%postname%/ permalink structure as assigned int he Permalinks Settings page on this blog Rock Town Hall . All seems to work well except the Category links that are generated in the left sidebar widget via the standard widget. They lead to page that just shows an opportunity to “comment”.

I believe all was well before this last upgrade, or the one before. I found this:

    Pages Returning 404′s

Log in to wp-admin and go to permalinks, click save (this should refresh your permalinks). Check to see if this fixes your permalinks. If not, set to default. 🙂
Disable your plugins to remove them out of the equation.
Log into your server via sFTP/SSH/FTP and find your .htaccess file. It should be located in the root of your WordPress install.
Pull the htaccess file down so that you have a local back up. Once you’ve pulled it down, go ahead and delete it from your server.
Go back to wp-admin and visit your permalinks page. try enabling custom permalinks.
This should remedy the issue and you can go ahead and reenable your plugins.

And it worked great until I reactivated the plugins. So if I deactivate them again, I still have the issue unless I go thru the steps above and don’t reactivate them. The “Default” permalinks settings work fine all across the board. The problem with that is that we have been around for 5+ years an there are loads of links out there on the web that are based on the %postname% system that will no longer work.

    Help?
