I just set up a /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/permalink structure and noticed that the word "category" appears in my url. Is this normal? When I click on a particular post all is well but when I click on a category the word "category" appears in the url. Am I missing something?

No, you are not missing anything.
On the permalink setting page in the admin panel you can change the word 'category' to anything - in the category base field.For the category archive view (i.e. when clicking on a category name) it is necessary for the internal working of WP.
