Permalinks and .htaccess problem (1 post)

    Hi!
    Before explaining my problem I would like indicate that I'm new to WordPress and that I read http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks and I spent some time for looking an answer on my problem on this forum.

    I'm running the newest WordPress 2.1.1 and I try to use Date & Name based permalinks but without success. First, I had to create .htaccess file, which I put into my main directory (where index.php is) and it has chmod 666. I don't know if this is right or not, but WordPress makes no changes to .htaccess file and it's empty when I open it.

    Secondly, when I go to Options>Permalinks and I try to change my standard permalinks to Date and Name Based, I hit UPDATE and WordPress says that the permalinks have been successfully updated. However, the indicator goes back to the standard permalinks and no changes appear on the website. .htaccess still remains empty.

    I tried to insert this into .htaccess:
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>

    No success. I also made sure that mod_rewrite is activated.

    I would really appreciate help.
