permalinks acting strangely (1 post)

I have two installs running on the same server.
On one I use the /%postname% in the permalinks option and it works exactly as I would expect on both pages and posts.

On the other this results in a page not found from the apache server. On this site I am using a css suckerfish menu drop down to pages and have speced a page to contain posts (blog).

I looked around the codex, the forum, etc and none of what I found helped until I came across this post.

After doing some experimentation, I noticed that this
    /index.php/%postname%/
worked on the pages (though I would prefer it not show the index.php in the url as it does) but it does not work at all on the posts within the blog section. Those result in the stylized 404 page in my theme and not the apache page not found screen.

I also noticed that adding a .html on the end
/index.php/%postname%/.html did not show up on the pages, nor did choosing any of the other permalink styles (besides the default which works fine) which resulted in the same apache page not found.

    Any ideas? Thanks.
