   After creating a page, (and its permalink)
   deleting that same page,
   then recreating it. I thought I would be able to recreate the permalink too.

   This isn't the case. I get a '-2' for my url.

   Is this standard, or is something bust in my installation?

   you need to clear the deleted page from the trash.
