Permalink Subdirectories (1 post)

I set up my personal site with WordPress and it's been working beautifully, but I'm trying to do something very specific and I can't quite get it to work.

I am using pretty permalinks, and I have a page detailing my projects at:

    http://www.mydomain.com/projects/

I want to be able to create a subdirectory of that virtual directory like this:

    http://www.mydomain.com/projects/project_name/

and have it go to a real directory full of non-WordPress files. I've attempted to create the directories, but WordPress ignores the permalink if the "projects" directory actually exists.

So, my question is this: can I use .htaccess or something to redirect (and cloak) /projects/project_name/ to another directory on my site or can I create the directory /projects/project_name/ and use some sort of .htaccess trick to show the WordPress page upon attempting to visit /projects/index(.htm/.php) but allow access to its subdirectories?
