• I’ve been searching through the weeds online for a related post that will address my problem about duplicate content after changing my permalink structure, here’s my problem:

About two weeks ago I changed my permalink structure from %categoryname%/%postname% to just %postname%. I then downloaded and setup a plugin called “Advanced Permalinks” that creates 301 redirects for all pages with the old permalink structure to the new permalink structure. It works well and I have no 404 errors.

About a week ago I started noticing an increase in duplicate content on Google’s Webmaster tools and it’s continuing to increase. So my questions are:

-Will the duplicate content go away as Google re-indexes my website for the new permalinks of all the posts/pages or do I have to remove them manually using the URL removal tool?
-Is there any suggestions/experience that you guys have with this problem that might be helpful??

    Any input is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

  • Will the duplicate content go away as Google

I don’t know but the reason you are getting this is that WordPress takes care of the permalinks when you change them. You do not need to created 301 redirects.

When I changed the permalink structure, all of my existing pages and post permalinks changed – WordPress does take care of the permalinks internally. BUT, since google has indexed all of my 300+ posts and pages with the original permalink structure, all of those pages must be redirected in order to avoid 404 errors when someone clicks on the post/page in Google SERPs…

The same pages that have been 301 redirected are the same ones that are being considered as duplicate content.

Seems like Google is pretty flexible about duplicate content.

Wish I could be more helpful.

Thanks, does anyone have any input on how to resolve this kind of issue or have had a similar experience?

So it’s about 3 weeks after I did the permalink change. Changed to a plugin called Permalink Redirect and just waited. I went from over 300 pages of duplicate content down to 12 today and it’s still dropping. I think that Google just needed time to re index and crawl all the pages.
