Permalinks are set to the WordPress Day and name option. I tried changing to the default (p=123) and received error that couldn't find this page. How do I get this to work?
Here is an example post of my blog as it is currently set and working:

Try re-saving the permalink structure. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

I did resave, but still get the error. I have left the resave for default in place so you can see the error. If you click the link above for my example post, you will now be redirected to an error page.
If you click http://climates.allergynursing.com/?p=153 you will be reach the post via the default permalink structre that I saved to.
What I am trying to do is get it to redirect the old Day and time permalinks to the new p=123 permalinks.
I appreciate your help.

You don't need to to do any redirecting. WP should look after that.

(new permalink for same page using default permalink structure)

I've just changed permalinks back to the Day and time structure since WP doesn't seem to auto redirect to the p=123. I don't want to lose my site in search engines.
I tried Permalinks Moved Permanently redirect, and that didn't help either. Still open to ideas to redirect, if anyone has any.

Can I ask why you want to use the default permalinks when you have been using a custom permalink structure? Most people want exactly the reverse.

Well, at one time the going thing was to use the longer hyphenated urls for search engine to pick up key words. So I set my blog up that way. Then everything I read in WP Codex started suggesting not to use the custom structures, I can't remember exactly why. So I set my newer blog up with p=123, as the Codex suggested (about a year ago), and I use All in One SEO pack to change the title of each page as I create it. I planned eventually to convert this one to the p-123 as well, since WP recommended it. I tried to find the Codex page that suggested the p=123 structure, but I can't locate it now. However, as I recall, it was pretty adamant about not using custom structures.
Anyway I had planned to ocnvert this one and install All in One SEO pack here and add titles for pages via that.
Is WP no longer recommending the shorter URL's? I have been out for some time due to illness (better now), so haven't kept up with the latest stuff. Am trying to get my blog updated.

The Codex has never suggested that you stop using custom permalinks. What has been suggested (and continues to be strongly recommended) is that you choose a permalink structure that starts with a numeric for performance reasons.
Since you already have such a structure, I don't think you have anything to gain by changing it and a fair bit to lose. If it helps at all, I use the same custom structure on my own blogs and they've all performed very well in Google.

Okay, that makes me feel better, emsi. Do you know where that page is in Codex? As I said, I tried to find it, but couldn't. I would like to read it again to be clear in my mind of what it says (though you have helped a great deal!)
But also am wondering, is WP not supposed to auto redirect if you do change from one of the permalink structures that have radio buttons in the permalinks page of WP, to another of the radio button structures? Maybe I'm not understanding that part right either.

When I originally set up this blog in July, 2005, there were no radio buttons for lengthy URL options such as I'm using in WP, only a place for you to insert custom code, and the Codex explained how. That is what I did and it worked well. I stopped upgrading and stayed at WP 2.2 for this blog until recently (as I said above, was unable to keep it up due to a lengthy illness, but better now.).
So I just upgraded to 2.92 a couple weeks ago, and was pleasantly surprised that WP automatically used the Date and time radio button for my custom code. I thought that meant that I have a supported custom WP permalink now that could be easily redirected. But maybe the fact that it 'grandfathered' me in has something to do with why it doesn't know how to auto-redirect to a different structure now. (though I will probably stay with my current permalink after talking to you guys and finding it is the better option anyway.)
