I have just finished building my new website and this is the first time for me. My old website is still present at http://www.blackstage-forensics.co.uk and I created the new WordPress site at http://www.blackstage-forensics.co.uk/wordpress/ after installing WordPress on the 123-reg Windows server. All went well. I renamed the folder containing the old site to <filename>.old and then changed the permalink addresses so the new site would appear at the original domain, rather than /wordpress/ in the URL. I tried to log in and failed. When I try to login at http://www.blackstage-forensics.co.uk/wp-login.php , I get a "404 - File or directory not found" after entering my username and password. I have spent hours trawling through forums and have not found a resolution and I am pretty desperate. Any help would be really appreciated. I have temporarily restored the old site to the URL.

I don't use windows and my database is with my hosting and not on my home computer. If your old site is through blogger or wordpress or something like that there is usually a plugin to be found that will move everything over for you. If you are moving from a regular website to a CMS site then I have no idea how you would do that. If your site isn't crazy big and you are desperate you can create a new folder, cut and paste or move the files you need into it, and then upload it to your WordPress site. The problem with that idea of course is moving all of the images. But if where you used to be is not really an easy sideways move you need someone who knows way more than I do!

Change the urls back. See Changing_The_Site_URL for details of how to do this correctly. Once the site is working correctly again at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/www.blackstage-forensics.co.uk/wordpress/ see Allow WordPress to take over the root domain.

Thanks guys. Really helpful. I now have the site up and running again. I have imported my old wordpress blog posts successfully but can't get the the old posts to display on my new blog page (which isn't a static page). Any ideas that may help...?
