I am unable to change my permalinks to a more friendly setting. As soon as I try to change the settings to month/year/day/postname I loose all of my posts and get a 404 page. I did find instructions to use code int the wp-login file to redirect (and then remove) but as soon as I remove it and try to update to friendlier urls I loos the pages again.

Also my message keeps saying that if my htaccess were writeable wordpress would fix this for me. When I looked here there was not an htaccess file (even after changing settings to see .files on my program so I followed the codex instructions and created one. I fixed the settings to 777 and still get the same answer:

    http://interbiznet.com/wordpress/

I have read and followed the codex. I am coming up blank.

That's a host config problem; talk to your host. mod_rewrite might not be available.

777 permissions are dangerous and leave you open to hackers. .htaccess needs to be no more than 644.

I know. Thank you. I did read that. It is the information provided by the developer so that their code works. You have to do it to the theme cache folder. If I don't do that I get no images.

When I talk to them about mod-rewrite is there anything else I should know so I can judge what they are telling me?

    Thanks.

It is the information provided by the developer so that their code works.

A folder requiring 777 permissions is irresponsible; tell them to fix their code.

If the host doesn't supply - or can't get to work - something as simple and ubiquitous as mod rewrite, find a new host.

Thank you. You did make me smile. My mantra is ""Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop." I am hoping the end is very near.
