• I am using the Pretty Parchment Theme version 0.95. When I change the permalink setting from the default to ‘day and name’ and I try to view my pages, I get a 404 error message that says ‘page not found’. Apparently, I have to change the .htaccess file. Where is the .htaccess file and what are the step by step instructions to fix this problem?

Also, which themes automatically update the .htaccess file when you change the permalink setting from the default?

  • WordPress automatically changes the .htaccess when you update your permalinks. In case it cannot, you will have to check it with your host. Usually the dot files (like .htaccess) may be found in the root folder. If you’re using cPanel, tick the ‘Show hidden files’ checkbox before opening the domain’s folder in File Manager.

WP does not automatically change the .htaccess file in the theme that I am using. I have to change the .htaccess file. Where is the .htaccess file and what are the step by step instructions to fix this problem?

which hosting are you using, windows or linux. If you are using windows, then you no need to worry and if you are using simply go to the root by using FTP. deleted existing .htaccess by simple delete command.

In the permalink structure, choose another type of structure and apply and again choose your existing structure. This step is very important, it will create .htaccess.

You can read more at http://is.gd/LYLCxc

After you did it, just install wp-redirection plugin. You will never get a 404 error
