   Why would you want your individual pages to have an address of

   http://www.mydomain.com/?=122

   instead of choosing a custom structure like http://www.mydomain.com/contact

   OR is this not what it is asking under the Permalink Settings page?

   The non-pretty ?=122 format is usable across any web server - the pretty permalinks have some dependancies. So basically it allows for compatibility.

   It also works no matter what the permalink settings are. Strictly, the '?variablename=variablevalue' format is how variables get passed page to page in PHP, so having that as default makes sense.
