There is a bug where I can not keep the permalink I want. For example, I have a post titled "Alphabetical Listings - A" and I want the slug to be just "a."
In older versions of WP this was easy: I began the post with whatever title I wanted then clicked on the text area. This saved the draft automatically and created a line that showed the permalink and allowed me to edit the slug (the default slug being the post title, with hyphens instead of spaces). Once edited, the slug would stay exactly as I set it no matter what. Also the post would have automatic saves periodically so I wouldn't lose material.
Here's what is actually happening: I begin the post and put in my title. I click on the text area and nothing happens. I have to hit "save draft" (or publish) to get it to save; if I refresh the page or my browser/computer crashes, it's gone forever. No auto-save either. Once I save the draft (or publish), I can see the permalink line. The default slug is the post title with hyphens instead of blanks, just like it should be.
I click on "edit" to change the slug but nothing happens. It simply doesn't work. To change the slug I have to go the page "edit posts" and then choose "quick edit." This works fine. BUT...if I make any changes to the post and update it (doesn't matter if it's a draft or published), it changes the slug again to the title of the post. I have tried several different files and also tried varying the order so I save it first with a title that matches the slug I want then change the tile. Doesn't work no matter what I do. The published post with the slug I want simply disappears and the wrong one is the only one that exists.
I had this problem when the permalink structure was the usual one I use: year/month/slug. I changed it to just the slug and the problem has not changed at all (the permalink other than the slug is always correct).
I have searched and searched for other references to this bug. I found some issues with custom permalinks see <http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/13022> but it doesn't really seem to be my issue and the fix doesn't work.
I am guessing there might be an incompatibility with my version of WordPress and a plugin or theme or my computer. But I am asking if anyone has heard of this and might be able to point me in the right direction before I go off on a random search.
I am running WP 2.9.2 on a Mac G4 with OS 10.4.11 and I use Firefox 3.5.8 (which is the latest version FF has asked me to download).
Thanks!
