Permalink and Teme editor issues

    Hey – Hope someone can help me here.
    I’ve just installed wp on a clients hosting account ( apache 2)
    all is well except when trying to update the permlinks I get a 400 error and when trying to update the theme files I gat a 500 error. I can update the css but not the php pages.
    This is not a huge problem as I can edit them offline and replace them but I need to change the permalink format for SEO purposes.
    Does this sound like a version conflict with the host?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    I’m running version 2.8
