She could have updated to WP 3.0, not sure.

This is probably going to be the craziest thing you have ever heard but here goes. I have a friend I was helping set up a website using WP & Aesthete Theme.

She wanted to add her constant contact HTML code to her website. Instead of calling me or asking for help, she pasted the entire code that Constant Contact provided (see below) on the General Settings page in the URL space under the tagline!!! She said she got HTML mixed up with http, so she thought HTML meant the URL.

Anyway, she pasted it there and hit enter and the whole site is down now. I cannot get into the dashboard at all.

If you go to her admin sign in: http://audreysartisticdesign.com/wp-admin/

    you get this error message:

Warning: main(/home/audreydj/public_html/wp-includes/compat.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/audreydj/public_html/wp-settings.php on line 265

Warning: main(/home/audreydj/public_html/wp-includes/compat.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/audreydj/public_html/wp-settings.php on line 265

I have been into the wp-settings.php, the functions.php, the compat.php in both the main and the theme and can find no where to fix this.

how on earth can i fix this for her??? IS this a theme problem or a WP problem? Do I need to reinstall WordPress? Will she lose everything? any direction would be appreciated!!!

The code she pasted in the URL line of the General Settings:

[big chunk of code removed by t31os] Not needed.

I would look through database for the field that stores URL and clear html.

Go into the database and browse the wp_options (assuming wp_ is the prefix) table and look for the option called siteurl (see below note first), edit the option, remove the HTML and plonk the original URL back in, ie. http://audreysartisticdesign.com/, then Save the changes.

    That should fix it..

NOTE: If it was the first box with the site URL on the settings page that was changed, then siteurl is the option that needs fixing, else if it was the secondary box (which follows the first), then the option to update is home.

Be sure you have a backup of your data before messing around with database entries.

To confirm which database is the correct one, open up the wp-config.php file and look at the database name referenced in that file.

Once you know that, click on the name of the database on the lefthand side in phpmyadmin.

Next a list of tables will appear in the lefthand menu(if not, click the little plus symbol next to the database name to expand the list), then click on the one called wp_options (assuming the default wp_ prefix was used).

A list of entries in the options table should now be listed on the page, scroll down if necessary, but you're looking for an option named siteurl or home (depending on which was changed).

Once you find the appropriate entry (should be obvious, you'll see HTML in the value field next to the name), click on the little pen icon for that row (it's the edit button).

Replace the HTML with the URL, click Go (basically means "Save"), and that should be it.

If you're unsure about something please post back first rather then just guessing(and possibly making a mistake) and i'll do what i can to clarify on the areas that aren't clear enough for you... ;)

Would you prefer that i take a look at it for you?

    *email removed*

Replace the bold words with the appropriate characters of course (helps stop the spam bots grabbing my address).

If you want to mail me over the login credentials i'll go in and fix the options for you (i would encourage you to change the password after i've been in, simply for peace of mind).

I'd not normally offer to do this for anyone, but it looks like you're struggling and i'm feeling super helpful today.. ;)

If prefered i can clarify on my previous instructions, let me know.

Not got an email from you, did you receive mine ok? Did you reply? Just concerned you've sent it and waiting on a response (not received anything from you though).

Just thought i'd post to let you know, incase you were assuming i received an email and was taking my sweet time.. ;)

    NOTE:
I shall not be around all day, but the offer will remain open for the next few hours, after that i may not be around for the rest of the day.

    Nope, nothing..

I can't believe my ISP would be blocking yours, so i can only suggest you send it to another email address(all of mine are under the same ISP domain, bar one, the one below).

Please send to *removed* please (removing the spaces and converting the uppercase words for appropriate characters of course). If the original email arrives in the mean time, i'll post back to let you know, but thus far you're the only person i'm having problems receiving mail from today (simply pointing out i am receiving other emails just fine).

    :(

I've checked each of the databases (wasn't sure which was the problem one), but none of them appear to have HTML in the siteurl or home options.

Are you sure it was the URL field this HTML was entered into?

The installation is not in the root directory (i'm looking in file manager), it's in a sub-folder called main, but there also copies of the root level WordPress files in the main directory (it won't work using the copied files in the root level folder).

I changed the siteurl back to http://audreysartisticdesign.com/main/ , it was previously, http://audreysartisticdesign.com/ , which was the cause of the problem.

    See.
    http://audreysartisticdesign.com/main/

    For login.
    http://audreysartisticdesign.com/main/wp-login.php

    Admin.
    http://audreysartisticdesign.com/main/wp-admin/

Do you want me to clean out the rogue files in the root directory? (note: all the files for this installation are in the main subfolder, so this won't break the WordPress installation in question). Confusing, because there's what appears to be remenants of two other installs on the site (i can clean this up for you if you want - whilst i'm there).

Thought i'd try logging in by creating a user account from the DB (not working - and i've removed it now).

Can you make a test user (assuming that works at this point). You can remove it once i'm all done.

Made a discovery (and glad i did before i removed anything), the database that received the last update, was not the one i've been looking at, and it's not the one that's used by the installation in the /main/ folder.

Is it possible ask your friend which database is the one she wishes to keep? Or which installation (ie. the root folder one, or the main, subfolder one).

okay..she has both a wp blog and a main wp website...the one that has the problem...the blog is doing fine at the moment...not sure why there are 3 databases...but the one I changed this morning was db 3

    http://audreysartisticdesign.com/main/
    http://audreysartisticdesign.com/blog/

can you figure it out from there? not sure what db is for what!!!

i also ran a backup this morning

Ok i've removed the root level files to clean out the directory, but i'm not sure why (yet), the blog and main directories are both giving me 404's...

Don't worry i won't leave you until it's working again.

    EDIT: Now it's back, yay!.

One thing concerns me though, the main install does not use the database that has the most recent post, the most recent post was made in installation that was missing files (and previously partially existed in the root folder) which was pointing at the now non-used database.

I can swap the installation to use the other database, but i'd need to know that's what you want before i go ahead and do it.
