  • Have you tried:
resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of your version of WordPress.

I do not know how to implement the two items you mentioned.

esmi Theme Diva & Modesmi – just read your link, looks scary but will try. Any tips you can offer would be much appreciated.

For the first suggestion, try reading the page at the link I posted.
For the second, you need to use FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. If these are still task that you cannot manage, you may want to consider hiring someone.

esmi Theme Diva & Modesmi – just reset the FTP plugin folder then I deleted WordPress off the FTP and re installed it and still no second line of editor functions. Might you have another suggestion?

I was missing the kitchen sink also, that is, the second line. The first line was visible, the second line wasn’t. When selecting the most right button on the first it whill show/hide the second line!

Didn’t know that, was looking for some time for solving this ‘problem’.

OMG… Wouter van der Zee.. i just went through the EXACT SAME THING trying to figure out what the problem was for the past day. jeez i knew the answer was less complicated then i was making it out to be & would be right in front of me. Thanks for your simple response that I was looking for for way too long.

I had this same problem, but “two levels higher”. I set up WordPress for a webmaster who runs a site for scores of users who create their own content, but probably don’t know anything about WordPress and aren’t in a hurry to learn.

In short, NOT having the Kitchen Sink (second row of editor icons) turned on automatically for each user is a real problem. I never change templates, so I wrote my own plugin to do what many sites recommend as php code to solve this problem: turn on Kitchen Sink every time a Post or Page Edit Admin page is displayed. I just put it in the Repository: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/jonradio-display-kitchen-sink/
