[resolved] Password Protection Not Working (24 posts)

I have set this page to be password protected with a password of 'password': http://clearpointdebtrelief.com/?page_id=49

When you enter 'password', it just reloads the page and gives the same password screen. I have tried disabling all of my plugins and I still get the same problem.

    What can I do?

    Thanks!

Have you tried switching to the TwentyTen theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

I just tried that and the problem still occurs. I also had contact the person who created the theme and they verified that they could get password protection working on their blog with the same theme.

I have used password protection on other blogs before with no problem.

    Try:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    - re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

    I have tried:

    1. Deactivating all plugins. No luck.
    2. Deleting all plugins from the server. No luck.
    3. Re-uploading fresh wp-admin and wp-includes folders. No luck.

    What can I do?

Not trying to state the obvious here but are you sure you're using the right password?

Yes, I have triple checked it.

    password = password

Can you switch to the TwentyTen theme and deactivate all plugins so I can re-check the page?

The site is live, so I can't very well change the theme and disable the plugins for more than a few minutes. Would you be checking the code? Would you like me to change the theme and delete the plugins from the server and test it real quick and then put it back?

Well, you need to be able to check it using a standard theme, so if that's all you can do, go for it.

I just temporarily deleted all of the plugins off of the server and switched back to the Twenty Ten theme. I tried on firefox and chrome and did a shift refresh. It still has the same problem.

I have reinstalled the plugins and switched back to my theme. Still same problem.

Have you tried using another password?

Yes, I have tried that. I have also just done two tests:

    1. I created another blog on another server and installed the same theme and plugins. The password protection works.

    2. I created another blog on the same server on the same domain and installed the same theme and plugins. The password protection works.

So, what does that lead us to conclude? The information in the database is causing the problem?

    Thanks for your help.

Are there permissions on any files that I should check?

How could I easily move the database to a new blank database?

I just also did the test of moving the database to another server and it works just fine there:

Please advise what to do. Thanks!

It does sound like there might be a problem with the database. Have you tried temporarily connecting that site to a fresh database?

I did try temporarily connecting to a fresh database and the password protection worked. When I imported all of the tables into that database from the current site, it broke again.

How can I move the content to a new database easily? Or do you have another suggestion as to how to proceed?

But, why would it work on http://www.elevatewebdesigns.com/blog/?page_id=49

and not when I move it on the same server? Strange.

It definitely sounds as if you have a db problem. Have you tried repairing the db?

How can I move the content to a new database easily?

You could export the content via Tools/Export, then switch to the fresh db and import the content. However, you would still need to re-upload your images.

How do I repair the db?

If that doesn't work, I will try importing the content via your suggestion.

You need to use a database management tool like PhpMyAdmin.

Is there a simple option to repair db in PhpMyAdmin?

First, I tried repairing the db using PhpMyAdmin and that didn't work.

Then, I switched to a fresh db and imported the content. Everything is working fine now. I had to recreate a few things, but it works!

NOTE: You should use two different browsers when testing the password protection. This way you can be logged into admin on one and it won't affect your password protected page on the other.

    Thanks for your help!

I did all the above and still password protection isn't working.
The password form doesn't even display.
    Have WordPress 3.2.0

So tried with new db - deactivated plugins - changed theme

    Nothing

    Any more ideas?
