[closed] Password protection not functioning in Bombax (24 posts)

I'm trying to password-protect certain pages in my blog, but the password I enter is not accepted. There's no error message, the page simply reloads with the password entry field again.

    Here's an example - http://danshousestudio.com/blog6/client/cristabelle-braden

Enter the password "Braden", and see what happens.

What am I missing? All of the attempts at password-protection are fruitless!

    Using the Bombax theme.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

Function doesn't work in 2010 theme either. I will try the plugin approach to see if that solves it.

Yahoo's servers host my site, and I installed Word Press through Yahoo.
I called Yahoo, and the tech rep said that Yahoo doesn't support this function. At least, that was his guess. Does this make any sense to you?

Perhaps he meant that Yahoo wouldn't support WordPress (aka "you're on your own with this one")?

Not so much that as suggesting that in order for password functionality to exist, something involves htaccess, which can't be allowed by Yahoo. Or some such stuff!

Just wondering if anyone else on Yahoo uses the WP password protection successfully? I would assume so - simply because I can't find anyone else complaining about this particular issue.

I think your Yahoo support person is confusing .htaccess password protection with WordPress password protected posts/pages - which don't rely on .htaccess.

Okay. Thanks for that, esmi! If I call Yahoo again, I'll clarify that with them.

Tried deactivating ALL plugins as you suggested, but the feature is still not functioning for me, in either Firefox or Chrome, or on any computers in my household.

Anything else I can try? Maybe set up another WP blog, a VERY simple one, with just one page, try password protecting it, and see what happens...?

Nope - set up a minimal 2010 theme test blog now, tried to password-protect the initial "Hello, World!" post, and still doesn't work. Entering the password just results in the same page reloading, asking for my password again.

Enter "password" as the password, and tell me what you see, esmi!

It works for me on the front page but not on the single post page.

I got it to work after clearing my cache and cookies in Chrome, but not always, and not for all my protected posts. And if I change the password, it doesn't seem to work - right away. I seem to need to change the content on the page to actually get it to reflect changes I've made.

Is there a lot I'm missing about caches and cookies?

That sounds like a cache issue at the host's end to me...

Would you recommend changing cache settings in Word Press? Or you're saying this is an issue with the cache on Yahoo's side?

I always seem to have problems with changes I've made appearing UNLESS I actually change the content on a particular page in some way.

I think it's an issue with the cache on Yahoo's or your ISP's side - given what you said above about the password change not kicking in unless you also change the post content. If your browser is configured to use your ISP's cache, try turning this off.

Would this be a setting in the browser itself, or a Windows setting? In Chrome, I don't see an option for this...

    pardon my ignorance!

Check under Tools->Options->Under the Bonnet in Chrome if you're connecting directly. If you're using a router, check it's config settings.

No, I can't find this option "under the hood" (American version!) in Chrome. And I don't know how to configure my wireless router's settings! Hmm...let me look into this...

...OK! Got the web-based wireless router configuration utility running. Let's see if I can find anything about IPS cache.

    (I mean "ISP") duh

Wasn't the ISP cache or the browser cache but the Word Press cache that was preventing from working! Works fine now once I tweaked the WP cache settings.

Glad to hear that you managed to track it down. :-)

Yes - knocking that cache down just makes the thing a lot easier, nit just the password thing. Yay. Thanks, Esmi.

    No problem :-)

I'm experiencing the same problem: i set up a password-protected page but every time i enter the password and press enter it just reloads the password request.

    http://vanasep.ca/stakeholder/
    password: banana

    refreshing the page doesn't help.

i am using a custom theme, but i switched to twentyten to test and it wasn't fixed. deactivated all my plugins without success. cleared the browser's cache, tried both safari and firefox, tried different passwords, no luck no luck no luck.

when you talk about your WP cache, are you talking about a plugin? I don't know where to find cache settings.

    thanks in advance.
