I created a category with a parent and assigned it to a post, worked perfectly. I created another post, created a new category with the same parent and assigned it to the new post. Once I hit update the new category dumped its parent and shows up in the category list in the edit post screen, no longer attached to the parent. I go to the category screen and the new child shows up everywhere as a child of the parent except on the edit post screen. This is not allowing me to create an accurate custom menu listing all of the child categories of the parent. on my blog: Parent = Neighborhoods, correct child = Society Hill, bad child = Center City. Coraline theme.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Thanks. It seems the categories are setting up correctly while the post screen pulls the selected subcategory away from the parent and displays it with the other selected categories for that post. New posts show the parent/child category relationship correctly until a child is selected when it is moved to adjoin the other selected categories. I suspect this is done for display only, the parent/child relationship remains intact. My goal was to create a custom menu of the parent and child categories and I can add them individually to this custom menu manually via the menu screen. I've got what I need thanks.
