Parent Category Count Number is Doubled

The Parent Category count number is doubling the count from what is actually there.
Example:
1. Parent Category (4)
a. First child (1)
b. Second Child (1)I saw another forum topic from 4 months ago. It was closed, but there were no answers posted about how to fix it.
