Pagination issues on homepage (10 posts)

I recently built this site for a friend: http://www.beatculture.net

Whilst he's busy uploading and importing old content, I've noticed that the pagination links at the bottom of the homepage don't work: I get a 404 error.

I've spent ages looking for a solution, but really can't work it out. My permalinks are set to /%category%/%postname%/

I've set my theme to display 10 posts and I've set the same number in the 'Reading' admin section.

I've also noticed an issue if I click on most of the navigation category links (such as 'Editorial'): whilst my browser status bar says it's going to

the URL changes to

once the category page has loaded. How do I tidy the URL up? The links work OK, but I'd like them to follow the same taxonomy as the status bar suggests.

It's probably something glaringly obvious, but I'm running out of steam!

Thank you for any help.

You need to change your permalink-structure. It's not a good idea to start your permalink structure with the category-tag as stated in the codex.

Thanks for the reply. :-)

I've now changed the permalink structure to year/month/post-name:

http://www.beatculture.net/2011/08/vans-downtown-showdown-2011/

But now I don't even get the 404 page. Instead, I get the error message (in Safari – Firefox won't even complete):

Too many redirects occurred trying to open the page

Any ideas?

Seems like the .htaccess wasn't updated properly. Was the .htaccess file writable (666) when you changed the permalink-structure?

Checked that and it's still doing the same thing.

The posts work fine for me. I do see a problem with the pagination and a problem with your permalinks. In the top-navigation your "news " category link is http://www.beatculture.net/News, should be http://www.beatculture.net/category/News, but that is probebly a link you need to fix in the menu section. The other top-nav links are correct: http://www.beatculture.net/category/editorial/ , but when clicked they fall back to http://www.beatculture.net/?cat=4, which indicates that the .htaccess file was not properly updated.

Further the pagination problem still exists. Try to see if the plugin you use has a option to flush any cache. If not try disabling the plugin and see if the basic navigation works.

Thank you. :-)

The navigation links work properly now (as you suspected, it was a plug-in conflict). I'll get the guys adding content to keep an eye on the URL lengths as they go too.

The pagination still isn't working though.

The pagination problem is probably also related to a plug-in. What plug-in/script do you use for the pagination? Try to disable the plug-in and fall back to this:

<?php previous_posts_link('« Previous') ?>
<?php next_posts_link('Next »') ?>

and see if it works now.

Or try this plug-in:
