I just installed wordpress on a server and everything went smoothly. I went with a new theme and started posting. What I’m having issue wrapping my brain around is the Page / Post / Category thing.

I’d LIKE to have pages for my daughters, and my house, etc, and when you click that page in the menu, you see the posts. Right now it kinda does that when you click that category on the side bar, but the theme I have (fractalexplosion) had links in the header for the pages, but when I click them, there’s nothing in there.

    Am I missing something easy?

    Don’t mix them:
posts are organized in categories, as you guessed right!

Pages are NOT for displaying posts and not for classification/organizing posts. They are for so-called static content, like a Contact oe About Us “page”.

    The menu can be edited…

Traditionally the pages are for putting in static info such as a contact form or some “About me” information.

Categories are for splitting your blog up according to post subject.

You can have pages that call only a selected category or group of categories but 99.999% of the time there is no need as the category links in your sidebar do this job.

Ok, from doing some more reading, and from your responses, it appears that I just need to change the “idea” of what they are in my head. It makes a bit more sense to me now.

Perhaps I should see if I could modify the template so that it linked the categories instead of the pages in it. 🙂

    Thanks again!

Personally, I would love to have categories for pages, but I seem to be a voice crying alone in the wilderness.

And please don’t bother to tell me I’m just not using pages right. I’m using them the way I need to use them for the management of the static content of my site. It’s the way I’ve used them for four years and I like it.

Well, I don’t think you’re a voice in the wilderness. That’s what I’d like to do: have pages for a specific subject and place all my posts for that subject on that page. And still have multiple categories so when someone click on ‘motivation’, they’d go to my page on motivation, as well as get all my posts under that category whether they were on that page or not.

AND I’d like the page to be in reverse chronological order, as well. That is, like the chapters in a book.

Just my own thoughts. But I’m grateful so many people work for free to provide me with such a fantastic tool as wordpress! So don’t take this as a gripe or a whine. I love wordpress and appreciate everyone who works to make it the best.

place all my posts for that subject on that page

And why Category_Templates won’t work for you?
