Pages Aren't Working, 404 error (11 posts)

I recently installed wordpress onto my website. I haven't made any changes to the codes, I've only been adding widgets and themes.

My pages are not working, I am getting a 404 Not Found error.
When I first installed wordpress, I tested to see if the pages worked and existed, and they did.

Can somebody please explain what I'm doing wrong? I was hoping to get my website up and running already.
    Thank you.

Try resetting your custom permalinks to the default setting. If that works, then set your custom permalink structure back up again.

Have you installed any plugins recently? Changed themes?

Okay, the pages work when the permalinks are set on default, but not on any other setting.

Yes, I installed three themes and twenty-one plugins.

    Thanks for helping me :)

One of those plugins could be causing your problem. Try deactivating them all then set your custom permalinks back up again. If the permalinks don't break, then you've narrowed it down to a problem plugin. At this point, you can try re-activating the plugins one by one - testing the site's links after each reactivation - until you find the problematic plugin(s)

Okay, I will try that, but first..
Once I change the custom permalink to, say, numeric.. it tells me "You should update your .htaccess now."
I feel silly asking this, but what exactly is it telling me to do? Could that be breaking my links?

Aha! Yes - that could be the root of the problem. Can you FTP into your site? You'd need to know how to navigate to the folder that you installed WordPress in and how to change file permissions (chmod) a file.

Sorry - I should have added that the .htaccess file contains "instructions" for the server so when someone clicks on a link, the server can figure out which page, or post, they want to see.

Okay, so I go into cpanel>file manager>public_html>wordpress and then.. where would the .htaccess be, and what do I change the permissions to?

Sorry if my questions are ridiculous, I've only ever made websites out of images and simple HTML/CSS stylesheets. Lol.

The .htaccess file should be in the wordpress directory. You need to set it's permissions to 666.

So, the .htaccess is a file?
    Is it the index.php file?
I'm not sure I understand how to find the .htaccess.

So, the .htaccess is a file?

    Yes

    Is it the index.php file?

No. It's actually called .htaccess. It will be in the folder you installed WordPress into - which, judging by your site's url, will be the wordpress folder.
