   on the blogs home page at the bottom... instead of the 'previous entries' and 'next entries',

   I want it instead to be more like:

   Pages 1 2 3 4 next

   Is there a simple fix for this ?

   Fix? Nope, not broken. But there are plugins that will do that. In fact, one was discussed here just an hour or so ago.

   Yeah, I use that plugin on my search.php page and it works like a charm. Highly recommended; it does exactly what you are asking for.
