Just as an add on t othis – I can still edit comments etc. Is this likely to be terminal?

Check your database and see if the posts are still there. I suspect they are, since the whole site isn’t dead, so what did you change recently?
Thanks – I didnt really change anythingas far as I know. i.e no new plugins or such like.
Can you point me to the instructions for checking the database please.

Right I found the database I can browse the tablet etc
So that looks ok.
I can see the followin tables in the db:
* Browse wp_comments
* Browse wp_links
* Browse wp_options
* Browse wp_postmeta
* Browse wp_posts
* Browse wp_terms
* Browse wp_term_relationships
* Browse wp_term_taxonomy
* Browse wp_usermeta
* Browse wp_users

actually – looking at wrong database – still cehcking
Did you modify your theme? Did you change permalinks?
A hack is, sadly, possible. You’re on an old version (if the 2.3 is correct, it’s not in your source) and that makes it more possible.
Check another theme, like Default, to see if it’s your theme or something less simple.
