   Last night I upgraded to 2.8.3, and on my next post at http://www.wormlips.com things started acting up.

   One of two things happens:

   1. When I visit the site, the page won't load, or
   2. The page will load, but if I go away to other sites and return, *then* the page won't load. Sometimes this happens after I go away just once, and sometimes it takes two or three times before it breaks.

   When I deleted that most recent post ("Death-Defiance"), everything seems to work fine. I've tried deleting and reposting that entry, but that doesn't help. And if I try to go directly to a previous entry, the page still won't load.

   Could this be related to 2.8.3, or do you think the problem lies elsewhere?

   Elsewhere. 9 out of 10 times, it's plugin related, so try deactivating all plugins. If this resolves the problem, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

   There's a slight chance it could be a theme problem, so the next step would be to try switching to the default theme. If that works, it's a theme issue.

   Very occasionally, WP does seem to get its permalinks in a mess, so deleting the .htaccess file in the WP install folder and then resetting the permalinks to the default settings can help. Once everything has settled down again and is running properly, reset any custom permalinks back up again but it's a good idea to review http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks in case something in your previous permalink settings contributed to the problem.

   Thanks very much, Esmi. I tried your first two suggestions (deactivating all plugins and theme-change to default) and nothing improved. Re. .htaccess: Sadly, I'm not technical. Once I tried deleting .htaccess and recreating it, and that made my blog vanish; I needed a programmer friend to help me get it visible again.

   • Is there a reference that tells a a nontechnical user how to delete and recreate .htaccess? It sure didn't work via ftp when I tried.
   • Is it possible to restore my WP version to 2.8.2 automatically, just to see if that helps, or do I have to download the legacy version and do it manually?

   Okay, I found the spot in that link esmi gave me that told me how to recreate .htaccess so I did that, and for the time being I can see my blog again! However, I have one more question: how do I reset the broken links (e.g. to comments on my Death-Defiance post)? I apologize for my ignorance and appreciate anyone's guidance.

   P.S. Okay, it's broken again. I can't see the site again, even when I'm logged in and even though I have a new .htaccess file. Any final ideas/suggestions welcome. Could it be an issue with my ISP somehow?

   A follow-up: Nothing I did made the problem go away so I got my ISP to restore my vs. 2.8.2 from backup and now all is well again. I'm hesitant to upgrade now. Maybe I'll wait for 2.8.4?
