page setup help

Hello: I do not know if anyone can help me with this, but let me say what I am looking to do. I am trying to setup a custom website using the WP twentyeleven or twentytwelve themes. I know how to do a child theme and I know how to do custom page templates and I know how to put things on pages with divs, floats, margins and padding, positioning and the whole nine yards. This is my problem. both of those themes are “responsive”. And so for example if I have three columns on page using “divs”; if i use either of those sites; it will attempt to move the items in those three columns down into a vertical column when viewed on smaller screens like smartphones. What I would like to have happen is for instead to just have everything stay in its place and the whole website just “shrink” to fit the smaller screen size….

Anyway to do that?
