Original month archive posts displayed on first page

Recently my original wordpress page started displaying the contents of the original month ( feb 2004 ) posts as the posts on the first page.
I can still create and see new posts but only by selecting the archive current month ( March 2008 ).
I tried updating the wordpress versions up to at least 1.5.x.x and posts are still displayed as before so i am thinking the database is corrupted in some subtle way. I will eventually update to latest but version seems unrelated to the data problem.

Any Ideas. As i say new posts can still be made but the posts as displayed on the front page default to being from the first month archived.
