Options/add-ons for products (not variations)

We have variations for products, but I’d like some way to perhaps include other products as selectable options..

e.g. widgets come in different sizes (1,2,3,4,5)
widgets can also have optional accessories (widget addons)

rather than create multiple widget products for the sizes and then multiple variations for all the possible addons and maintain a million prices, it would be brilliant if there were some way to have tick boxes so a customer can add particular options to their product.

Is there any way that can be done?
