My site allows users to publish posts from front end. I want to allow images to be posted, using the 'image embed feature' ie they post the image url such as http://www.flickr.com/photos/helenj-a/4405313660/
That works fine and I can make these images thumbnails in the wordpress panel. I'm looking for a way to make that thumbnail click to open in a larger size via a modal window/ lightbox. Is there aplugin that does this?
Thanks

Many. Like shutter-reloaded for example. Go here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/
But I think you first then have to upload the bigger image through WordPress and insert it as a thumbnail in the post.
How do you create the thumbnail now? By uploading from the link to wordpress and then editing?

In the media section wp-admin/options-media.php you can set embed details such as image size. That's all I use, no thumbnail setting. So I set the image to be resized quite samll. The image is displayed purely from the URL link using the embed option. Really I want to be able to click the resized image and see it in an overlay as a larger size.

Ok, now I get it. There are some plugins for Flickr, but you have to test them: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php/page/2?q=embed+Flickr&sort=
