I’ve used WordPress, back up database, move sites all the time, but I did something thats got me stumped.

On one of my client sites, they had 30+ themes installed. They were trying to get different look and feel. They asked me to get rid of many of the themes.

I started deleting themes in the wp-admin, but decided that since I could add themes by dropping them into wp-content/themes, I should be able to remove them. (YES, I should have made a full backup, but I didn’t!!!) So, using FTP, I removed about 25 theme directories. Now the website is broken. The website is http://www.estherspa.com. I get this error:
The website encountered an error while retrieving http://www.estherspa.com/

In an attempt to fix, I have restored the default twentyten theme. I re-loaded the files from wordpress and then restored my wp-config.php.

I haven’t done anything with the original database.

Anyone have an idea what to do to fix this problem?

  • try deleting all templates, leaving only twentyten, to see if wordpress selects twentyten as default

Clear your browser cache and try it again. The lifestyle theme seems to be loading okay for me when I visit the site, and /wp-admin gets me a login dialog.

John. Thanks for the idea. I did what you suggested, but it didn’t work. But your comments did remind me that I am using a Genesis child-theme. Genesis framework requires both the Genesis main theme plus the child theme. I had deleted the genesis theme. I re-installed that and the child-them and it came back.

    Thanks for your insights.

Thanks Clayton. I think you got there just after I got it fixed.

    Looks good!
