I am new to webdesign and an aquaintance suggested your software. I would like to do a simple website with a forum. This software seems to be only for blogging - or am I wrong? Can I do a general website and not a blog using WordPress?

Actually, you can - but being "new to webdesign" won't make it easy. And it will not have a forum - unless you install some WP+forum integration plugin and the forum script as well.
It also depends on what is a "general website". WP can be used as CMS (content management system), but if you have webpages in a 'general website' - it would be an overkill.
