   Is there a way to have the image used in a post have 2 different links depending on where it is displayed?

   1) On the front page I'd like to have users click on the image and have them taken to the post where the image is embedded.

   2) When users are viewing the post and click on the image I'd like to have a lightbox open and show the image at a larger resolution.

   Is this possible?

   That is the way WordPress operates normally anyway.

   Even if you use the same picture - I would not use the same picture however - the front page would have a thumbnail picture (I usually make them on my PC and upload) that is smaller and less resolution - then your front page loads faster. Then use the regular full size picture in the post.
