It would depend on how you set the template up. you can still make menus (like maybe one across the top?) that would have all that. Therefore you click on them and you have archives, etc.
There is no special reason, just a design preference by the author of the blog. Some like the uncluttered look of a single column. Anything that needs to be accessed from the main page can be added to a horizontal menu across the top or below the header graphic via a javscript or CSS menu.
All boils down to same reason: The same reason that you might use 2 3 or even 4 column templates. Personal Preference

Ok, thanks, I thought it had a specialized application. Mainly, I couldn’t see how to use recent posts showing about 50 posts and a long archive list.
I’ll just stick with my regular 2 columns.
