old wp-config.php lost (8 posts)

I am trying to update my blog. I think I did everything right except I copied the old wp-config.php. I thought that the c-panel had a copy of the site so I should be able to retrieve the old file and put it in. The consultants at justhost (my cpanel) decompressed what is supposed to be the backup but it does not look anything like my site's.

I can't seem to find any other reason why my site would not up date. This is the second attempt. Should I just ask to have the backup installed again and try again? The site comes up, but it the version number is the same old 2.8.1.

If the site is viewable & usable, then your wp-config.php file is intact. Did you run wp-admin/upgrade.php

Thanks Emi. I didn't even think of that. So there is some other cause for the failure to update.

I did not run wp-admin/upgrade.php. What do I do. Sorry to be so dense. I looked on my dashboard, but apparently there is something more to do. Codex says I should get it when I login.

Are you trying to upgrade manually or automatically via the admin panel?

I am on the .org site. So I have to upgrade manually. Sob. This is the second failed try.

In another codex, I found that you should not copy over your old files. I copied over. Maybe I can just erase those folders that I copied over and try FTPing again without doing all the prep that I did for this most recent attempt.

Thinking back over it, I just copied over folders (except the content folder) so maybe I did not erase my old wp-config-php or the other files that should have been with it. I don't remember seeing a bunch of files outside the folders. Still maybe that is the mistake.

I am thinking rather than do this hassle for my other site that I am about to put up, I should just put a site on my cpanel with fantastico. I think that might be easier. Anyone have experience?

Well, the basic upgrade instructions are as follows:

    1. Backup your files and database.

    2. Deactivate all plugins.

    3. Download WordPress and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download.

    4. Run the upgrade script at /wp-admin/upgrade.php

More detailed instructions are available here:

You are right. I was sure that I read to copy over. So, I bow to the gods of codex.

What does it mean to run an upgraded script? Where do I do it? I read the extended instructions about running ..... but it fit into nothing that is familiar to me.

I am about to re-do the upgrade. This time right I hope. Hope you can tell me what running a script means. Or at least what I do.

    Thanks for all your help.

In your browser, go to yourdomain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php or yourdomain.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php or yourdomain.com/blog/wp-admin/upgrade.php etc. It depends on where WP is installed and where that file is, but you basically just visit it in your browser.
