I’ve read many of the posts and tutorials on reconnecting a new install of WP to an old DB. I believe that I pretty much understand the process, but I must be missing something because it’s just not working out.

I dropped the tables from the new database (named the same as my old DB), then imported the old DB (which was successful), and adjusted the config file to point to the correct DB and user.

When I go to install.php, it says that WP is already installed and that I need to empty the DB in order to install, but some part of this worked because if you go to roastbeefvag.com/theflapper/index.php, you can see the posts in my old DB without any of the WP formatting, and you can’t login from the link on that page because it says that the document can’t be found.

Additonally, I changed hosts between backing up the old database and attempting to reconnect. I wouldn’t think that this would be an issue except that if you click on login from the link that I gave you, the error page refers to my old host.

I know for sure that all of these files exist on the new server, so this must be beyond my understand of php? I’m an extreme newbie.

    Please…take pity on me…help.

  • How much URL redirection is going on here?

I followed your URL above and after a click ended up at http://www.d1027126.dotsterhost.com/applications/wordpress/

There shouldn’t be any redirecting at all. I am now hosting with laughingsquid.net. I was hosting with dotster. roastbeefvag.com goes directly to the index file of my httpdocs folder on the laughingsquid.net server. In the httpdocs folder there is a folder called “theflapper,” which is the wordpress folder renamed.

I have noticed this “re-direction” as well. This is part of the problem that I don’t understand.

When did you make the host change? Recently? I wonder if the DNS changes have fully propagated.

I changed the nameservers yesterday, uploaded all of the files to the new host today, and I’ve deleted ALL of the old files from the old host because I wanted to make sure that I knew which host I was seeing.

I’ve tested a couple of files to make sure that the nameservers had been updated, and roastbeefvag.com does point to squid15.laughingsquid.net.

Every basic manual says to wait 48-72 hours when nameservers have been changed.

Are you able to log into the blog? Are the two URI values at Options -> General correct?

The blog, at your link, is looking for CSS at http://www.d1027126.dotsterhost.com/applications/wordpresshost.c/wp-content/themes/default/style.css

So something isn’t quite right… I’d start with those URI values.

I understand the “basics” of waiting for nameservers to propagate, but this is the exact problem that I was having when I was hosting with dotster before I switched hosts.

    Here’s the history:

Dotster used WP 1.5.2, and I installed it through their control panel. After installing, I had to beg them to give me write access to the webapps folder containing the wordpress folder so that I could upload themes and plugins as well as upgrade.

I successfully upgraded to 2.0.4. Everything was hunkydory.

I read a forum about moving WP files to a more accessible location so that I didn’t have to hide the long url (d107276.dotserhost.com/applications/wordpress) by placing it in a frame. I exported the database from phpmyAdmin prior to moving everything.

I followed the instructions CLOSELY. I lost all of my formatting. I tried moving the files back. I was no longer able to login or even see the admin page.

I uninstalled through dotster and reinstalled several times, each time trying a different method of connecting to my old DB.

When I reinstalled, I could login. When I imported the old DB and uploaded new themes, the WP admin interface didn’t recognize any of it, as if it wasn’t there. When I dropped all the tables and then imported the old DB, WP would say that I needed to empty the database to reinstall.

I called dotster. They crapped on my head…said that they don’t support the new WP. I called laughingsquid, explained the problem, and they said that they thought that everything would work out on their servers because WPv1 doesn’t support database imports, but v2 did.

I am still having the same problem.

    Sooooo….

Right now, I cannot login. If I get rid of the old DB and reinstall WP with a new DB, I’ll be able to login with the new password it gives me. It all works fine until I try importing this old DB.

    Confusing enough? Anyway to help?

Ok, we need those URI values to point to where the blog really is.

Since you can’t log into the blog and do it all politely, you’ll have to do it another way. Have a run at this tutorial: http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! That fixed it! I cannot express how much I appreciate it.

    Awesome. 🙂

Mark this one as [Resolved] at the top of the page?

    Happy blogging!

    Shame on your old host.
Mark, if it hasn’t been said lately, thank you for creating and continuing to host those tutorials. I have to believe that one gets used more than any other link out of these forums.
