2 sites, both WP 1.5
Site 1 - sidebar.php set to 755 - Theme Editor says not writeable - must change to 777 before Theme Editor can write to it
Site 2 - sidebar.php set to 644 - Theme Editor says writeable! I can edit and changes are saved!
This makes no sense to me......
any ideas?

I have one site where my files have to be 666 to be edited and another where 644 is okay.
Whoever you are hosted with for Site 1 seems not to take security very seriously. Consider moving.
a) it's always good to upgrade - the latest stable is 1.5.2
b) are the sites on the same server? I assume not, so it might be a server settings issue
