Odd categories and tags behaviour

Hi

I’ve installed wordpress (via GoDaddy) and I’m having problems with categories and tags. I’ve added a selection of categories to the system. I can apply them to stories and they appear beneath posts, but they won’t appear in the categories widget or on any section where I’m trying to define filters based on them…

Any thoughts.
