Is there a way to have the search results numbered? I’ve seen numbers next to individual comments on some themes. Any clues?

I would imagine you could edit search.php and add an <ol> tag in the appropriate place(s).

I’ve never used that element before. And here I thought there was some big php answer. Thanks.
