   Hi there

   Is there a plugin (or a standard feature that I've not spotted) that sends an email notification to an admin whenever speciifc named user(s) posts any comments?

   A 'watch list' notification service for comments, I suppose... ?

   Yes, in Settings >> Discussion, there is a field where you can enter a Name, email address, IP address, and website so that if the comment contains any of those, it will hold it for moderation. You can also opt to be notified when a comment is held up.

   Are you aware of a way to send an alert to an admin without holding the comment for moderation?

   Not really, you can ban certain people from commenting, but unless there's some sort of plugin out there I don't think you can get a notification about it if it's not held for moderation.
