I had reply from the EWWW Image Optimiser plugin author, and he may be willing to add support for Nextcellent Gallery.

But he wants to know that more people than just me, would like to see this done.

Please head over and give your support at:

    Thanks!

    Hi dfreerider,
    thanks for your comments.
Few days (weeks?) ago an user requested same thing, so I took a look on the problem.

There are is a workaround to make EWWW work with NextCellent right now:
    1) Install Nextcellent on nextgen-gallery folder.
This is due EwwwIO is expecting the plugin is installed on that folder and no other. Strictly speaking, it expects the file on nextgen-gallery/nggallery.php

However, this solution would be in conflict to those users using or testing NextGen together with NextCellent.

The other idea, which needs some work would be
    2) Tweak the plugin detection on EwwwIO.
I already worked on that area, even I didn’t finish. I think it’s time to connect with EwwwIO author.

    A third idea:
    3) Provide a better way to interact between both plugins.
The way of plugin is detected should be improved regarding future interaction.
I didn’t go that far…actually both plugin can’t interact due hardcoded path definitions. There should be a better way.

Unfortunately, there is no way to detect that a plugin is activated (currently) without hardcoding paths. However, a feature request has been filed here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/ewww-and-nextcellent-gallery-incompatibility?replies=5

Any nextcellent users who wish to use EWWW Image Optimizer should go and add their +1 on that thread. Once there have been enough votes, I will start working on support for NextCellent. It won’t take too long to implement, but it increases testing I have to do for every release, so I will not start on this until sufficient interest has been shown.

@wpready, I figure this integration WILL happen sooner or later, so I would like to make one request. Please implement a hook at some point after thumbnails are generated for newly uploaded images. The current situation in NextGEN legacy is that the full-size images get optimized, but the thumbnails do not, which requires one of two things from the user:
    1. They must manually click an Optimize Thumbs button after the upload is complete.
    2. They must run a Bulk Optimize after uploading new images.

I’d prefer it to not optimize any images when adding new galleries as I bulk optimize from the gallery list page.
    Could this be optional?

    Absolutely great!
Thanks for supporting Nextcellent, please tell us when you publish dev version so I can post about it.
