Not getting a 404 when visiting deleted page

    Correct me if I am wrong, and hopefully point me in the right direction, but if I delete a page or a post, and then try to go to that link after deleting it, shouldn’t I get a 404 error?

    I have a 404.php page made for my site and have a few deleted pages that come up in search engine results. I’d like the actual 404 page to come up.

    Any idea why WordPress (2.0.2) is using the 404 template?
