Not clear what files to delete for upgrade (5 posts)

Apologies if this has been asked before but i couldn't find anything.

I have been trying to upgrade my blog to 2.1 but without success. Yes, i did the backups and deactivated plugins and all the key steps. What is confusing me (maybe) is the following instruction under the list of files to delete:

wp-* (except for those above), readme.html, wp.php, xmlrpc.php, and license.txt; files; Typically files in your root or wordpress folder. Again, don't delete the wp-config.php file.

Are we supposed to delete the Core files? I have 4 core files (core.19333, core.25553, core.25587, core.29787). Do i delete those as well? Or are we supposed to delete only the specific files listed - readme.html, wp.php, xmlrpc.php and license.txt? Or do we delete only the files that have corresponding files of the same name in the new version?

To be frank, these instructions could be a bit more precise.

Sure, you can delete core files. They're remnants of some program blowing up on your server, WP sure doesn't need 'em. ;-)

Seriously? The core files are not part of WP? Where do they come from then? They're huge files.

I'm still not entirely clear on whether or not we're essentially supposed to delete everything in the wp* section (except wp-config.php) or just the specific files named in the upgrading instructions (readme.html, etc.)

Before deleting anything, download everything to your own box as a backup somewhere. Hey, you never know, and backing up is *always* a good idea.

    Delete:
-Everything in wp-admin and all subdirectories.
-Everything in wp-includes and all subdirectories.
-Everything in the root except the subdirectories, wp-config.php, and .htaccess (and anything of your own that you might want to keep there).
    -If there's a wp-content/cache directory, delete it.
That should be enough for safety. You may have some plugins that will be overwritten as well, like Akismet. You'll also want to compare your wp-config.php file to the wp-config-sample.php file and verify that they have the same basic format. If they're different, make the wp-config.php file look like the sample file, but with your specific settings.

The "core" files come from your server crashing for whatever reason. This is not necessarily WordPress related. They can be deleted.

Thank you for that. That was very helpful and this time, the upgrade worked properly.
