   Hello, I was a happy WP 3.1 user with no problems. I upgraded manually to 3.3 and was not able to upload any pictures since then. I have my own hosting with full root access. I found this error in the log:

   [Sun Dec 18 11:21:19 2011] [error] [client 190.195.96.16] PHP Warning: copy(/var/www/html/diseno-bijouterie/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/collar-pendiente-fimo1.jpg) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/html/diseno-bijouterie/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 348, referer: http://www.xn--diseo-bijouterie-9tb.com.ar/wp-admin/media-new.php

   I've changed folder /wp-content/uploads and all inside to user and group apache and set permissions to 777. That has not fixed the problem. Very Very disappointed so far with 3.3.
   Any idea?

   Try the default theme. If that solves it, then it is a theme bug. Also try disabling all plugins. While there, check that none of your themes or plugins, even the inactive ones, contain an old version of timthumb, an image upload helper. (Look for timthumb.php, at least.) You can Google that. It was big security problem caused by themes and some vendors' theme galleries. Web hosts have been known to scan all accounts and disable timthumb. The new version is fixed, but it is probably one of the worst security things to hit WP in a long time. All caused by old themes hanging around!

   Hello Kitchin, thank you for your post. I use the default theme twentyten. I have a few plugins and none of them are related to pic uploading. I tried disabling all and nothing changed.

   I just updated to 3.3 on two of my wordpress installs that I had. The first which is on a different server went perfect. I can upload and everything. however the second time I tried to update different server I can't get anything to work. Uploading not pop up a page instead it opens it in the same page. Where when I click on the upload button nothing happens. When trying to update plugins I clicked the select all options but it didn't check mark all the boxes I had to do that manually. This is very frustrating because this is a business website that this issue is happening to. I can't switch from HTML or Visual look either where I post messages. It seems like a java issue. Any help?

   Like the above poster I have disabled everything and changed themes and nothing. In fact I tested the same theme on the other one that is working and it works just fine.

   Trying to convert back didn't do much. It does allow the uploading but again it does not pop up a window but instead opens it all in the same window which messes things up. Not to mention still can't switch from the HTML view. It has completely messed up everything. I'm guessing because of the database now.

   Hello David, regarding the installation that does work, do you own the host server and have full admin access or you are using a hosting service?

   Hi I had this issue as well... this one I spent quite some time trying to figure out but it turned out that the new version of White Label CMS plugin is causing the problem for me.... I disabled it a voile', the pictures posted as beautifully as ever....

   So the White Label CMS incompatibility issue is something someone else can work on... I can put pictures up now and that's cool....

   Having the same issue. Was fine until I updated to WP 3.3 today.

   Now I can't upload files. Disabled plugins etc. still the same error:

   [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/html/.../wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 348

   It's definitely something wrong with WP 3.3.

   I've had this same issue with TWO "clean" installs of 3.3 (not automatic updates) AND have seen it now in multiple manual upgrades to 3.3. Plugins & theme issues were definitely NOT the issue.

   With each of the sites, we did a manual install of 3.3 onto the server. after the manual install, the sites wouldn't upload media into the posts (it would take you straight to the media uploader in the same page), the widgets lost all drag & drop functionality, the theme "preview" in the appearance-->themes area of the admin would open the theme preview in the same window (NOT as a lightbox). This indicated that there was a problem with JS in the admin area.

   These sites were on different servers/hosts with different hosting packages/configurations, so it was not server or webhost specific problems.

   I've done *numerous* automatic updates to 3.3 on other sites - again, different hosts, different hosting configurations - without any problems.

   So, this is what I did to solve the admin JS issues & it's worked like a charm on every site that this has been an issue...
   [keep in mind, if there were plugins, all of them were deactivated. ALSO, theme was set to default theme if applicable so that we were sure it was not related to plugins OR themes.]

   1. Deleted ALL files from 3.3. (left database intact)
   2. Uploaded version 3.2.x files on the site(s) that had the JS admin problems after manual installation of 3.3.
   3. Log in to admin area. It gives a prompt that there is a newer version & asks us to upgrade. THEN we let it upgrade automatically to 3.3.
   4. Cleared cache, refreshed pages. Everything worked fine.

   Our experiences with 3.3 seem to indicate that there may be an error/bug in the full version available for download (for manual installs/upgrades). I can not repeat the JS errors on ANY site that I've done an automatic upgrade with - only problems we have seen are on sites that are upgraded/installed manually with the full version of 3.3.

    Jeez Debs ...

    They are still human beings and not gods. And like the rest of us ... and software in generally ... sometimes it FUs.

    You've obviously not been around long nor played with their Buddypress ...

    Why have some folks got to treat using Open Source software like religious adherence to a cult?

    This release broke something.

    Jeez wanker who won't reveal their identity, you clearly didn't read my initial post in which I actually mentioned the new White Label CMS causing my problem (which incidently was upgraded within hours of it causing me trouble) and I didn't mention WordPress 3.3 at all....So what's your problem dickhead, just felt like giving the positive chick some grief aye.....?!!
    But you know what, people like you just don't like others to be happy, let alone win.....
    So happy happy joy joy to you and don't take any notice of those bad feelings you're dragging around with you, they won't help any of us solve this problem...

    Same problem... I have upgraded a dozen sites or so with automatic update and it worked fine. But I have 1 site (on a different server) that ask for ftp user and pass when I tried to update it so I guess it was requiring a manual update and now I am having the exact same issue.

    This is annoying and 3.3.1 didn't fix the issue... I need to be able to upload images to finish this site..... I could upload them through ftp if I have to but this site has multiple galleries with hundreds of images and would take forever that way...

    I just had this problem on a Windows server. I looked through the PHP logs and found that the Temporary folder was /tmp, which didn't exist. I created a /tmp directory and the problem was solved.

    If you don't have root access, you can set the Temporary Folder location in the wp_config.php file, use the following snippet:

    define('WP_TEMP_DIR', 'WRITEABLE_DIRECTORY' );

    That directory location would be absolute, of course.

    I'm getting errors too and have not seen them before. Very frustrating. I'm on a windows server and I think it's permission based. I had no problems a few weeks ago while on 3.2.1
