Noob in need of some serious help. SO FRUSTRATED! (19 posts)

I do not know what I'm doing. The farthest I have gotten with wordpress was getting someone else to install it for me. I have been reading through the docs on the site (WordPress lessons, working with wordpress, design & layout, etc.). I feel like almost every link on this site leads me to another list of links and it is like a bottomless pit of link fractals & none of it makes sense.

I guess my problems begin with me not being able to get into this so-called "administration panel". They even show me a screen grab of what it will supposedly look like: http://codex.wordpress.org/Administration_Panels
It tells me what it is and what it can do, but not how to access it.

I don't even want a complicated site! Just a nice clean background with a couple of links on the side, my logo at the top, and some text in the middle! That's it!

    Somebody help me please!

Go to http://yourdomainnamehere.domainextension/wp-login.php under normal circumstances you should get a login screen.

Hi there, firstly welcome to the forum, a great start would be a link to your site, theres no need to feel frustrated, because everyone has to start somewhere when using any blog system if you can post a link, we can always tell you how to access and login to your admin section.
    good luck. mike.

    Unfortunately that doesn't work: http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c36/kjr928/?action=view&current=addressnotfound.jpg

Would that be the normal way to operate wordpress? Thanks for your help.

You're also going to need an FTP Client program to manage files on your site, unless your web hosting service provides it. It takes a while to grok all that is WordPress, just take it a step at a time.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients

I use SmartFTP, there are several freeware/donate-ware programs.

    A good point from MoonbatWingnut.
    Filezilla is excellent and free.

If someone uploaded the system for you, they may be able to guide you through using an ftp program.
Best advice really, once you can log in, explore wordpress, and familiarise yourself with all the different areas, and ofcourse, start writing. all the best. mike.

    Thanks for your help guys,

I do have an FTP client: Coffee Cup.

I tried to log in to WordPress here: http://www.roostercouncil.com/wordpress/wp-login.php and my user name/password will not work. It keeps telling me it's invalid. So I clicked on the lost password button and they are supposedly sending it to me but it hasn't come. That was about 30 minutes ago.

So basically I have an ID & password that it won't recognize, an email address that it does recognize & tells me it's emailed me, but I don't get the email. I am just going in circles now.

    :(

Maybe you should ask this person what they specified for the address and password

also use a password manager if your using the default password, change it to something more memorable.....

I am in the same boat as you, I am finding that starting out with wordpress took ages, and I got it working, even to the point i got my own theme to look like the site, although that has to be slightly adjusted to be perfect for the site, just a small hick......

I also feel the codex is huge a bit like norton antivirus knowledge base, to big to actually ind what you want.

good luck and stick with it, it eventually sort of gels in your head.

When I requested they email the ID & password I had to enter the email address. First I entered the wrong email address and it told me it was wrong, then I entered the correct one and it said the email was sent. So based on that I believe I at least have the right email address.

    What could the problem be?

It sounds like a mismatch of admin username, password and maybe email. The person that installed WordPress should provide all that information for you. Then once you can actually log in, you can change things, with the exception of the admin username.

Ok I got in! As it turns out my mail forwarder wasn't working properly.

Now I will be able to explore WordPress and try things out! Thanks so much for all your help everyone! I'm sure I will be back with lots more questions really soon!
