Non-Alphanumeric characters in usernames (4 posts)

    Hi everybody.

I am trying to set up a new website for an already running community.

I put the basic stuff together (WP 2.9.2, BuddyPress 1.2, bbpress (stable)).

Now, starting testing, i noticed something which is strange for me as a WP novice.

I tried to register with a username containing spaces.
The form told me, that this is an invalid username.
Ok, fine. There will be a solution somewhere. But searching all WP, BP and BB forums i couldn't find what i was looking for.

The problem is, i would like to switch a complete community from an old system to wordpress. If wordpress is not capable of using spaces and other non-alphanumeric problem, i would get into real trouble and might have to drop the idea of using wordpress (We have 40K Users and most of them use non-alphanumeric characters).

    My questions:
Is there a way to use non-alphanumerics?
Why is there such a restriction?
What would be the side-effect if i hack that stuff so it might work with non-alphanumerics?

    TIA

I just tried this out on my own site and had no trouble registering the name blah blah

Check Admin Panel / General / Anyone can register, and set your new user default role immediately under that.

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Both settings have been enabled before.

I just rechecked to be sure and tried again.
It is still not possible to register with a Username that has spaces, non-alphanumeric or even uppercase letters.

Does WP have such a restriction?
Or do i need to take a closer look at any other component?

Ok, i could locate the problem.

    It's buddypress!

WP itself does at least acceppt scores, underscores and spaces.

So this is done. If someone has the same problem: Look at buddypress!
