I installed wordpress with multisite enabled on a new domain this week using softaculous.
I have read that blogs.dir folder is no longer used for wordpress version 3.5 and above
What about the mu Plugins folder? Softaculous didn't instal it so I assume it is not used anymore?
BTW I crated two Mutisites, one manually and one via softaculous, for comparison.

WordPress does not create the mu-plugins folder, but it still uses it.

I have several plugins network activated. They display as per the descrip[tion in your link David, but I don't have a mu-plugins folder.
    Can I assume I don't need it?
    Wordpress current version 3.5.1

You won't need it until you find you need it. And when you do need it, you can just make it :)
