No Host No domain name, how to install?

    1/ I would like to install/try wp on my home pc
    2/ Can dual boot into xp/sp2 or Mepis 8 (debian linux) will use whichever is easiest to install.
    3/ Want to develop website at home without having to pay for hosting while I’m learning/developing.
    I have been trying to find this info but most of it seems very convoluted and I’m afraid I might go in ever diminishing circles and disappear you know where.
    Hope someone can tell me how to do this in VERY simple hand holding terms please:-)
