    I am no web designer but here is my first attempt.

    I started out with the dots template from Alex King and modified it to make it a little more my own.
    I am enjoying this as it is giving me a reason and method to learn a little about PHP and CSS.

    Excellent job on your first attempt but maybe a light background colour on the content section? Or separate the background and your navigation/content with a border or something and make it a different dark colour.
